best home dehumidifiers 2020

There are many reasons you should buy a dehumidifier for your property – and they dont all involve flooding!

That’s because, raised humidity inside a property can lead to an array of health problems such as asthma as well as leading to extensive property damage from rotting wood and rusting support structures. Irrespective of the weather outside you should always consider investing in a dehumidifier to keep your property dry and free from humidity.

How to choose the right dehumidifier.

When choosing a home dehumidifier, you really need to take into consideration how humid the room you’re trying to dry out is. You also need to consider other factors such as the size of the room and even the floor coverings and composition of the walls. For example stone walls can be fairly impervious to moisture whereas there can be a lot of water locked up in plasterboard coverings which can significantly increase the need for a more powerful dehumidifier. You should consider all of these factors before deciding which machine is right for your individual circumstances. In general, large rooms require a 70-pint unit, whereas mid-sized areas can do just fine with a 50-pint model. If you want to avoid cords then the wireless Eva-drys are perfect for bathrooms or small basement workshops. However, no matter which dehumif

Eva-dry Electric Petite Dehumidifier Edv-1100, White

The Eva-dry is a great choice for sucking the humidity out of a bathroom, closet or small room. It is relatively quiet and has a decent price point at around $50. It is marketed as a “petite” dehumidifier, but it is larger than some of the more micro models available. It’s 16 oz reservoir takes approximately a week to fill up. This dehumidifier does run quietly, but not as quietly as some other models. The cord is also relatively bulky for a small model so you have to be careful with where you put it or it can be an eyesore. Even still this product does its job effectively.

 Frigidaire FFAD5033W1 16″ 50-Pint Dehumidifier

This model is a full sized dehumidifier that pumps out the advertised 50 pints of water per day. You can choose to allow the bucket to fill or attach a hose and have the product empty into a catch basin of your choice or into a sink. The collection container has a water level indicator and the unit features a handy washable anti-bac filter. This dehumidifier’s collection container fills rather quickly when humidity levels are high so if you can set it up with a hose, you will be able to have it running 24/7 if you choose. It also boasts its Energy Star rating so it should save you a bit on electric costs. If you’re using this for your basement it is quiet enough generally not to be heard from a floor above, but doesn’t run exceptionally quiet.

 Gurin DHMD-210 Electric Compact Dehumidifier

This model is another compact model that uses hermo-electric peltier technology which allows you to just plug it in and walk away. It goes for a $40 price point and is perfect for smaller spaces. If you want to help remove dampness from a bathroom that has bad or no ventilation. It runs extremely quiet and has a 16 oz container just as with the Eva-Dry. It is marketed as being able to collect 8 oz of liquid per day (1 cup) but tends to only collect about half that even on the most humid days. Still for the price, this is a great model to choose from.

 Ivation GDM30  Powerful Mid-Size Thermo-Electric Dehumidifier

This is a great little machine that sells for under $70. This model just like the other micro models has a 16 oz (2 cup) container and an LED indicator telling you when it is full. It is also equipped like the other models with an automatic shut off. The Ivation runs nearly silent with no moving parts and when placed in a proper room for its size, this product performs very well collecting about 1.5 cups of liquid per day. Its compact size and lightweight design means its easy to move between rooms and is ideal for RV’s, boats and even cars.

Keystone Energy Star 70 Pt. Dehumidifier, KSTAD70B

The Keystone 70 pint is the first big boy on this list. It has a $190 price point, which is actually much lower than other 70 pint dehumidifiers. At the end of the day you should buy this product if you need 70 pints worth of dehumidifying done per day, but also want to save some money due to its price. This model does a good job, but is also more flimsy than another 70 pint models and is louder than its competition. Still if you want to save $50-60, this product cannot be beat.

Eva-dry E-500 Renewable Wireless Mini Dehumidifer

Another Eva-dry model at an even lower price point that is less powerful, but is wireless. That is the catch of this dehumidifier. You can set it up anywhere and it will work as hard as it can and for such a small item it really does work well for its size. It is promised to work for 10 years or more by the manufacturer and several people say they’ve had it for over 5 years now and it is still working well. Essentially you turn this dehumidifier on and it runs for several weeks. It has an indicator that will tell you that it is at maximum capacity, then you plug it in for several hours and the indicator will tell you when its ready again. This is very handy for small spaces and for its mobility obviously, having no cord is amazing.

Frigidaire FFAD7033R1 Energy Star Dehumidifier with Effortless Humidity Control, 70 pint

This is Frigidaire’s 2016 model, their newest. There has been two major changes to this 2016 model over the 2014 FAD704DWD unit. That is the placement of the intake and the vent. The intake is at the rear and the vent is to one side, which can cause some issues with placement. This unit gathers as much water as the FAD704DWD and works just as well in cooler weather. The dehumidifier is about as loud as your average window air conditioning unit. It is perfect for getting the job done in medium to large sized spaces.

Eva-dry Renewable E-333 Wireless Mini Dehumidifer

This mini wireless is an older version than the E-500, but works faster. A small closet or bathroom will be very dry overnight after using this product. It has a $20 price point making it the most affordable choice for small spaces. You just have to remember that when you plug it in to dry it out, you need to have it in a dry room, not the humid room that you would be using the product in. If you need to dry out a small space and don’t want a cord on the floor, this is your best bet.

  • Reusable and quick drying, simply plug into a wall outlet of a well ventilated room for 8 to 10 hours
  • Handy indicator beads light up when the unit is full

Frigidaire FAD504DWD Energy Star 50-pint Dehumidifier

This is Frigidaire’s 50-pint model. It operates much the same as the FAD704DWD and FFAD7033R1 it is just less powerful and therefore collects less water per day and uses less energy per day. This is your mid-sized model and you should choose it if you don’t want to waste energy on one of the 70-pint models. This unit works very well, but the collection bin has a tendency to rattle a bit making this 50-point dehumidifier a bit louder than the other models, unfortunately.

Frigidaire FAD704DWD Energy Star 70-pint Dehumidifier

The FAD704DWD is essentially the same as the FFAD7033R1, though it is one year older it has much better vent and intake placement allowing you to put this unit wherever you need it to be. This model is very nicely designed, very quiet despite its size and the most efficient considering the amount of water it will suck out of the air for you. For the go big or go home crowd, this Dehumidifier surely takes the cake.

Some final thoughts…

All of the models listed in this Top 10 review have great overall review numbers and as long as you’re not trying to use a small model in a large space you’re going to be happy with your purchase. Select the right model for the space you have.

The Frigidaire FAD704DWD is the clear victor.

If you want to rid your property of dampness and mildew and then you clearly need this superb dehumidifier.
